Rufford Abbey & Historical & Ecological Considerations
Rufford Abbey
Located in the heart of Nottinghamshire, Rufford Abbey Country Park is one of the region’s most visited free-to-enter tourist attractions, spanning 150 acres of scenic parkland. Recently, Parkwood Outdoors secured a 15-year lease to operate the park, and Parkwood Project Management (PPM) has been appointed to spearhead a series of capital improvements aimed at enhancing the park’s facilities.
Planned Improvements
The enhancements included:
- Refurbishment of various retail and catering outlets
- Installation of a new mini golf course
- Development of children’s adventure play facilities
- Introduction of boating activities on the lake
Historical and Ecological Considerations
Given the park’s significant historical and ecological value, PPM is also providing essential landscape, planning, and listed building advisory services. The park houses 16 Listed Buildings, all of which are under statutory protection. Furthermore, the Newark and Sherwood District Local Plan designates the park as a Site of Interest for Nature Conservation (SINC), with the land also falling within a broader Source Protection Zone.
Survey and Specialist Engagement
Early recognition of the need for comprehensive surveys was crucial. PPM’s responsibilities included commissioning:
- Topographical surveys
- Phase 1 Habitat Surveys
- Archaeological surveys
Drawing from its extensive network, PPM engaged qualified ecologists and specialists to carry out these essential assessments. This expertise ensures that the park’s development respects and preserves its historical and ecological integrity.
Stakeholder Management
The project involves a complex network of stakeholders, including English Heritage and Historic England. Effective communication is paramount to managing these interests, necessitating both formal and informal channels to facilitate ongoing dialogue and contract performance.
The partnership between Parkwood Outdoors and PPM represents a significant commitment to enhancing Rufford Abbey Country Park while honoring its historical and ecological significance. Through meticulous planning, specialist engagement, and effective stakeholder communication, this project aims to develop the park’s facilities, ensuring it remains a cherished destination for years to come.
